2019: Year in Review
Another year has passed! Can you believe it? I sure as heck can’t. When I started the Light Leaks in 2017, I couldn’t think past the first 6 months. Now, with 2020 at my doorstep, I’m being challenged with figuring out the next few years. If 2019 is any indicator of what that will look like, then it’s looking pretty good.
Here’s some of TLL’s highlights from this year:
The Hustle Launches: The Hustle is our advice column where we breakdown topics like online branding, what it takes to be a producer, and how you can actually finish your script!! (Yes, it’s possible. Promise!)
We Added New Merch: Our Invest In Yourself enamel pin can to life as a pastel heart that can go on anyone’s sleeve. Inspired by my own mantra, the pin represents self love, acceptance, and choosing yourself.
Asian Representation: One of our summer interns, Marissa Domantay writes about her experiences as a Filipina creative and how Asian representation in Hollywood oftentimes means just one ‘type’ of Asian. It’s one of my favorite pieces from this year :’)
Big Little Lies: Film writer Sophie Hayssen discusses the intricacies of Big Little Lies’s domestic abuse plot line through the lens of the Me Too movement’s ousting of public figures. With the manipulative tendencies of abusers to appear like good people, Sophie breaks down the complexity of public personas.
Remembering Agnes: Grace Bennett writes about her love of the late Agnes Varda. Inspired to find beauty, honesty, and a story in the world around her, Grace thanks Agnes for her work and trailblazing influence for women in film.
Our Youtube Page Goes Live: In 2019 we took the plunge and started our youtube page! It’s a place where you can watch, share, and support the work of female and GNC filmmakers. We even launched a few series concepts like Scrolling Pep Talks and Dissecting the Scene! Subscribe here
4 Events in 4 States: This year we visited Chicago, San Francisco, Atlanta, AND Brooklyn for events. From meetups to panels to storytelling nights, I worked hard with collaborators in each state to create the best experiences possible.
Looking back at this year, I can’t believe it. The things that the Light Leaks has been able to pull off is all because of YOU, the community that supports it. THANK YOU for following, sharing, and supporting our work. It’s still a team of one but I promise, I got a lot of energy left in me.
Happiest new year <3
