2020: Year in Review
Hi!
It’s Kim Hoyos, founder of the Light Leaks, and as 2020 has now come to a close, I wanted to take a look at what this year looked like for TLL and our community.
Without a doubt, COVID made 2020 an emotionally taxing and panicked year that greatly affected us all, including the artists and creators of the world who are often working in freelance, contract, or at times, seasonal environments that can rely heavily on crowds, spectators, traveling actors, etc. So many have turned to online communities and art as a means of human connection this year. We’re very lucky to be a place folks can turn to for education, support, inspiration but most importantly- community.
Here’s our year in review of inspiration, educating, and empowering female and nonbinary filmmakers:
We welcomed 11 new volunteers to the Light Leaks.
We interviewed 5 different female and GNC filmmakers!
We published 7 think pieces! These editorial pieces were mostly education based resources including: free pdfs on screenwriting and production, basic editing tutorials, and professional advice from feminist career strategist, Cynthia Pong.
We hosted 13 different Instagram Lives and Takeovers with creators across the country. From a free IG Live yoga class to a takeover with an award winning filmmaker, each of these takeovers were resources of education and inspo for our community.
We relaunched What We’re Watching with 3 new editions! What We’re Watching was previously named What She’s Watching and is meant to be a judgment free space to learn about new tv and film recommendations based on a theme. We rebranded this to be gender inclusive and also to best show the collaborative nature of the column.
We published 3 project spotlights celebrating rising women and nonbinary filmmakers.
We published 5 episodes of Dissecting the Scene, our series devoted to asking female and GNC directors, editors, showrunners, and DPs to break down the anatomy of why a scene was created the way it appears and how it was done.
We joined 2 Affiliate programs, Adobe and Soundstripe! We’re striving to reach the point to pay our lovely and hard working volunteer team. Affiliate links can help us reach these goals - so every-time you complete a purchase through our website, we’ll receive a commission that helps keep TLL moving forward!
We have a new resources page!
With TLL reaching our 4th birthday this February, we’re more excited than ever to continue celebrating filmmakers and amplifying the voices of creators so often silenced in mainstream media. To have others to work on the Light Leaks with me has been a mission affirming process and I know that that their voices and skills will make TLL an even better community for women and nonbinary filmmakers.
Thank you for supporting the Light Leaks.
Love and good, new year vibes,
Kim Hoyos
